The room was moving in an unpredictable way, much in thesame way as it does when you’ve been drinking the previous night and wake upwhile still drunk. I had been drinking, but that wasn’t it. As I lifted my headand promptly banged it on the plastic ceiling, everything became clear. I was hung over, and on a boat.
To explain, James, in their infinite “let’s make things asawkward for our fans as possible” wisdom had decided to quite rudely schedule acouple of gigs right when I was on holiday. The gits. Specifically, they hadscheduled two gigs with a special, brand-spanking-new setlist of unreleasedmaterial, in London, September, 2007, around dinner time. In James terms it was big, so big that I hadto cut short my stay in Holland and drive all the way back. My plan was as simple as a really simplething: do it in one day. This was thatday, and the following is the true (and only slightly exaggerated) account.

In the preparation and delivering of Hey Ma, James showcased 19 completely new songs, and probably wrote dozens more. At the secret gigs in Hoxton, late 2007, they were all unleashed onto an eager audience. Waterfall, Upside and a lot more made the cut, but what about the songs that were lost in the ether?
Here's what they're like, according to your James correspondent - myself.

"So Eck, tell us about the flower on your arm." It's always a talking point, but to be honest I haven't yet been subjected to the torrent of abuse and ridicule I fully expected when I decided to have a strange, roughly drawn, seven petal daisy tatooed on my upper right arm in April 2007. I'd strongly considered the design back in 2001 but after Tim announced his departure from the band that December it felt pointless. I would have been as well having an image of the Titanic emlazoned on my back. In January of 2007, when a friend (you know who you are) informed me of the re-union there was two things on my mind. One, and most importantly, was getting tickets for a comeback gig, and the other? A trip to the tatooist with my six-year-forgotten design. And it was sore. Fucking sore.
So why a James fixation? Why a daisy addiction?

Here it is, finally on Egoiste, my story of April 2007.
Yes, you will see illegal driving, arguments with prostitutes, dangerous drug cocktails, steam-ruined hotel rooms, poorly planned drinking games, annoying train journeys, London on the cheap, and missed coaches. Oh, and a few gigs by this band I like.
This is the special edition, which means it contains about 3% more text. Actually, all I added were a few more references to stress how big a thing it was for me to do (and it was big), and a few subtle (and not so subtle) bits that were originally intended as a joke to cheer me up one lunchtime. Also, it leaves it open for a sequel.
I hope the formatting turned out alright.
